There are multiple websites on the Internet that provide current reciprocity law, state-by-state. Here are a few you might find useful:
https://www.nraila.org/gun-laws/
https://www.gunstocarry.com/gun-laws-state/
Always double check with the appropriate states’ Attorney General site. The sites mentioned above do an exceptional job of keeping up-to-date with the rapidly changing laws, but realize that the onus is upon the individual gun owner to verify the accuracy of information for their own protection.
An 80% firearm, also called a “ghost gun” by the media and politicians, is simply a kit that has been modelled after a fully complete and functioning firearm, but has not yet been 100% drilled/milled out to receive the fire control unit(trigger and hammer assemblies).
80% firearms do not have a serial number because they are not recognized as being a functioning firearm by the ATFE and therefore do not fall under the classification of a regulated firearm. Once they have been completed by the user, then firearms law can be applied. In many states where 80% firearms are legal, the owner may or may not need to register their new firearm.
In the case of a rifle modelled after the Armalite 15 (AR-15) platform, the 80% lower receiver needs to be secured into a jig which guides the user in where to place drill holes and remove part of the solid receiver to accept the trigger and hammer components. Once the remaining 20% has been milled out, then it is simply a matter of sliding the individual parts into the receiver and securing them with the corresponding pins in the holes which the user drilled.
With regards to a pistol 80% kit, a jig is required and drilling is necessary. Pistol 80% kits are easier and less complicated to finish.
As always, the user needs to verify in their jurisdiction if 80% firearms are legal. In the majority of states, they are legal, but there can be prohibitions from county to county within a state that allows 80% firearm kits. Perform your due diligence. Remember, ignorance is not a viable defense for violating a law.
Defense Tactical Gear can’t answer specific questions about legality or provide legal advice to our customers. Everyone’s individual situation is different and laws vary state to state.
Be sure to check your state’s specific laws, requirements, etc. to ensure you remain in safe haven with your decisions.
